Round 1. Freedom in our life

  • How do you like to let your hair down? (to relax and enjoy yourself)
  • Who or what is a symbol of freedom for you? Why?
  • When did you feel as free as a bird? What were you doing?
  • Do you prefer stability and predictability or you like to step into the unknown?
  • Are you at liberty (to be allowed to do) to reveal some nuances of your work? Is there anything that you should keep in secret?
  • What is better to be footloose and fancy free or in relationship? (to have no responsibilities).
  • Do you know anyone who is a free spirit? (does not feel limited by the usual rules)
  • Nothing is ever free. Is it true that eventually you will pay for everything?
  • Wisdom is achieved by keeping an open mind and a closed mouth. What do you think about it?
  • The best things in life are free. What is your opinion about it?
  • Have you ever taken a free ride to anything? (get without much effort)


Round 2. Free to take risks

  • Are you in general a risk-taker? Is a risk something you avoid or embrace? (welcome)
  • Do you weigh the costs and benefits of every decision? In which situations?
  • Are risk and learning English connected? In what ways?
  • Are you willing to: try new things, meet new challenges, test your limits.
  • Was there an occasion in your life when you cast caution to the wind? (stop being carful and took risks)
  • Have you ever been rebellious (мятежный) in your life? What rules did you try to break? What is your attitude to rebels (бунтари) in art, business, and in life?
  • If you had a huge sum of money to invest, what would you invest it in? Would you rather choose less risky but less profitable investment or highly risky and highly profitable?
  • What risks could you undertake at work? (take responsibility for)
  • Have you ever taken the road less travelled (неизведанная дорога)? For example, when choosing a travel destination or making other choices?
  • In the conditions of uncertainty, what helps you to take decisions — intelligence, logic, perseverance (настойчивость), or a bit of luck.


Round 3. Free society


  • Man is born free and is everywhere in chains (Rousseau, philosopher) Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
  • Do you know any freedom fighters? Is it worth fighting for freedom?
  • Would like to participate in the political process and casting a vote on significant issues? (to vote in an election)
  • How do you understand freedom of the press? Why is it important for society?
  • Do you think that education should be free for all? Why?
  • Why do you think these right became «universal human rights»? Freedom of expression, Freedom of association, Freedom of peaceful assembly (мирное собрание), right to participate in public affairs?
  • What are benefits of free trade among countries? (international buying and selling of goods, without limits and special taxes)
  • Can our society be described as free society where all individuals act voluntarily (of one's own free will), having the freedom to obtain the power and resources to fulfill their own potential? (succeed in developing abilities)
  • Is a dictatorship dangerous? (ruling by a leader who has complete power in a country and has not been elected by the people)


Round 4. Freedom at work


  1. Does you company give you a free hand to do something on your own? (the right to do anything you consider necessary)
  2. Should companies give employees free rein? Why? (freedom to act and make decisions without first getting permission)
  3. What do you do of your own accord at work? (of your own free will)
  4. Have you ever worked in a company with open door policy? (when bosses leave their office door "open" in order to encourage openness and transparency with the employees) Did it really work?
  5. Is it difficult to keep an open mind? Is it important? (be open to everyone and everything that comes your way, allowing yourself to embrace different possibilities, opportunities, people, views, suggestions and interests)
  6. Work is about more than making a living, as vital as that is. It's fundamental to human dignity (достоинство), to our sense of self-worth (самоценность) as useful, independent, free people (William J. Clinton). Do you share the same opinion?
  7. Every human has four endowments (дары) – self-awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom… The power to choose, to respond, to change (Stephen Covey). Is it true for you? What gives you freedom?
