Round 1. On the edge of your seat.

  • What film genres keep you on the edge of your seat? (extremely interesting) Action films (with fighting, violence, and chases), adventure films, comedies, crime films, dramas, epics (historical), horrors, musicals, sci-fi films, documentary?
  • What is more important for a good film - startling originality (remarkable), suspense (uncertainty about what may happen) surprising plot twists (surprising turns in a story) or sensational cast (amazing actors)? Can you give any examples?
  • Do you trust rave reviews (written with great admiration) of films, books or theatre productions (постановки)? Do you follow them or you have your own selection criteria?
  • Can you think of a gripping (exciting), overrated, harrowing (extremely upsetting), truly memorable, hilarious (extremely funny) film?
  • What can make a film a dismal failure (complete failure) or unmitigated disaster? (total disaster)
  • What's on at the cinema, theatre or museums? (show now) Are you going to see any new films, productions or exhibitions?
  • What topics awaken your interest and fire your imagination?



Round 2. Impressed by the arts

  1. Why is art created? Is it for money, fame (being famous), to fulfill that inner calling (a strong urge toward a particular way of life or career) or change the world?
  2. What kind of fine art do you gravitate towards (prefer) sculpture, painting, photography, architecture, design?
  3. Can you think of an evocative (bringing strong images to mind), thought-provoking, intriguing, peerless (unrivaled) and pedestrian (dull) work of art?
  4. Do you thank that going to exhibitions and seeing works of art on display (shown in a museum) are time well-spent?.
  5. Are you familiar with performative art, such as theatre, opera, dance, ballet, stand-up comedy, concerts? What places and events have left indelible impressions on you (lasting)? What are your most profound (very great or intense) impressions about a piece of art?
  6. Have you ever seen any picturesque (scenic), historic, magnificent (impressively beautiful), atmospheric, quaint (unusual) architecture?
  7. What is the future of art? Will it survive?
  8. Are you a creative person? Have you tried to create anything?



Round 3. From cover to cover


  1. When was the last time you had your nose in the book? (were reading intensively)
  2. Have you read any books of the following literature genres ? Non-fiction books (prose based on real facts), novels (a fictitious prose narrative), poetry, science-fiction, biographies, mysteries (detective stories). What was special about them?
  3. What topics are in your good/bad books? (you have a good or a bad opinion of)
  4. Have you ever read a page-turner (an exciting book) which was full of moments of insight for you?
  5. Do you think books give us opportunity for self-discovery (an attempt to discover who we are)? In what ways?
  6. What writers do you think highly of? Whose books do you detest? (don't like)
  7. Which topics and issues do your favorite books illuminate? (clarify or explain)
  8. Have you ever started reading books that were heavy going and you couldn't get into them?


Round 4. Hearing

  • What is your taste in music? Has it changed in time? Would you recommend any singers or bands?
  • Do you have a musical ability and ability to appreciate the music?
  • For example: to understand and interpret the music, play or sing, have a musical ear.
  • Why do you think some people are fanatical about certain singers or bands? Hav you ever been such a fan?
  • What factors contributed to the popularity of the iconic bands like the Beatles or Metallica?
  • Should tone deaf people be allowed to sing in karaoke bars? Have you ever tried singing in a karaoke bar?
  • What are some concerts you have been to? Have you ever been to an outdoor music festival? What was special about it?
  • Do you like the sound of… (your opinion) — talking in front of many people — doing an extreme sport — going for a hike — learning something new. Why?
